Bolivia Walaycho – The Walaycho is the smaller relative of the much more common charango. this family of instruments are the is the only stringed instruments used traditionally in the Andean region of South America and its origins are in Bolivia. The walaycho (hispanicized spelling hualaycho, also walaychu) is a small lute-like fretted stringed instrument, the smallest member of the charango family. It is the same or similar to the maulincho. The walaychu along with the charango and its variations were born in the 16th century among the Ayacucho regions of Peru and Potosi in Bolivia.

Dimensions Full size at 57cm long (22.5″) x 14cm (5.5″) wide x 7cm (2.75″) deep Scale length 32cm (12.5″) The instrument comes stringed.

We also sell a charangos with hard and soft cases and accessories. Comes in soft case made from traditional aguayo material.

Due to the rarity of Walaycho we can only supply a charango case as we simply cannot find a case for Walaycho. Design may differ due to stock but will be similar to that pictured. Case colour may differ.

Bolivia Walaycho Background

The Walaychayo is a small Bolivian stringed instrument of the lute family, which probably originated in the Quechua and Aymara populations in the territory of the Alti-plano in post-Colonial times, after European stringed instruments were introduced by the Spanish during colonisation. The instrument is widespread throughout the Andean regions of Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, northern Chile and northwestern Argentina, where it is a popular musical instrument that exists in many variant forms.
