A Magnificent Piece of Burmese Heritage

This is an exceptional, brand-new example of a traditional Burmese string puppet, known as a Yoke thé (meaning “miniatures”). These marionettes are a cherished art form with a history rooted in royal court performances.

This particular figure is the beloved Zawgyi, the powerful Alchemist and Magician. In traditional theatre, the Zawgyi is celebrated for his comical nature, mystical powers, and dynamic, acrobatic dance sequences. He is instantly recognizable and a favourite of both performers and audiences.

Key Features & Craftsmanship

Authentic Characterization: The puppet features the Zawgyi’s distinctive hand-painted face, characterized by a bushy black beard, moustache, and a slight, quizzical smile.

Ornate Costume: Dressed in the Zawgyi’s iconic attire: a long, flaring robe of deep red velvet-style fabric, lavishly trimmed with brilliant yellow satin.

Intricate Embellishment: The costume is heavily decorated with hand-stitched sequins, embroidery, and beads, demonstrating high-quality traditional artistry.

Carved Wood Details: Features meticulously carved and painted wooden head, hands, and articulated joints.

Complete & Pristine: Fully strung with the traditional wooden control bar, in perfect working and display condition.

This beautiful marionette is a must-have acquisition for collectors of Asian folk art, theatre history, or unique decorative pieces.

Important Notes

Handling: Due to the delicate nature of the strings and costume, careful handling is highly recommended.
