We sourced these ourselves while in Indonesia and personally met with the wood-carver who made them.

All the wooden items in our shop were also made by this talented man and his family.

The item has a hanging loop on the back.  Only the top side is painted.

All our balinese animal wall hangings are handmade in Bali by Darma. We have been working with Darma since 2008.  You can see other pieces by him here.

We sell many handcrafted items from Indonesia. Indonesia has so many amazing indigenous crafts.  We sell more geckos and other animals in our other listings. 

We stock many of the kinds of crafts that Bali is rightly famous for and are small part of supporting the craftwork industry there and ensuring that the skills built up over generations are not lost.

Background

Woodcarving is the most enduring and widespread medium for artistic expression in Indonesia. Each Culture has its own style, and the diversity and sophiscation of Indonesia’s woodcarvers is remarkable. In Indonesia a house not only protects its inhabitants from the elements, but repels unwanted spirits. Example include the horned Singa (lion) heads that protect Batak Houses, the water buffalo representations on toraja houses sigifying prosperity, or the serpents and magical dog carving on Dayak houses in Kalimantan.
