We hand selected these hats ourselves when visiting their shop, and met with the workers ensuring conditions and pay were sustainable and fair. A fair trade price was paid in person at the workshop. The weavers from the outlying villages near Cuenca, from whom they purchase the unfinished hats, are paid a price set by the weavers themselves.

Barrancos History

Barranco was established in 1942, on the banksof the Rio Tomebamba, in the beautiful colonial city of Cuenca, Ecuador, and are considered one of Ecuador’s finest hat makers, dedicated to making highest quality products.

Originally the factory exported Panama hats north from Cuenca, Ecuador to Panama City by horseback. Panama hats were taken to Panama City because it was a prime export hub in the early years of the Panama hat industry. The trailwas tough and would take many weeks using horses to transport the hats from the workshopin Cuenca. From the 1960s, until recently, the workshop would export unfinished panama hats directly to English merchants who would finish them in england. However in the 1990s, the Ecuadorian workshop imported the necessary equipment from Brazil to finish the hats themselves.

This natural, handmade treasure is handwoven from Toquilla straw. Despite its name, the Panama hat belongs to Ecuador. Its name became known during construction of the Panama Canal where workers wore them to protect against the sun. The native Toquilla straw has been grown in the Ecuadorian wild for centuries.

The Panama Hat contains the tradition of the Ecuadorian weavers. The manual skill and natural nobility of the Toquilla straw contributes to this company’s ISO 9001-2000 Quality Certification for the design, production and export of hats and straw articles.

Can I roll my Panama Hat? Yes, you can – the flexibility of the fibre allows rolling without damaging the material, however, please note that there is a special technique to roll, and as with all clothing,it will be left with a fold which will alter its shape from optimum. (this is the case with all Panama hats, so be careful of gimmicks). You can iron your hat to return its shape, but we recommend you don’t transport your hat in a small box, as per the advice of a number of expert hat makers in Ecuador.

In order to preserve the hat in its optimum shape, we chose to send our hats out to our customers in a sturdy large hat box, designed to protect it fully during shipment. We post our hats in cardboard boxes unrolled. Other sellers might send their rolled which can mean they will arrive mis-shapen. Hats should be rolled for as little time as possible to preserve your hat and ensure it lasts.
